Fukushima Nuclear Radiation Leak: Potential Danger in Philippines True?

Earlier today, a text message has been circulating around warning people of the potential danger caused by the explosion of a nuclear power plant in Fukushima, Japan.

If a nuclear power plant actually exploded, it is very dangerous and the effects would be catastrophic. Not only will Japan experience it’s deadly radiation but the other nearby countries as well.

Japan’s Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant was damaged due to the earthquake last March 11, 2011. The Reactors of the said nuclear power plant was affected. Fortunately 2 of the reactor was stabilized. The only problem left is the Reactor 3. One of the building in the said nuclear power plant exploded resulting to leakage in the power plant.

Because of the said event, the Radiation and leakage could cause undesirable effects to people in Japan as well as nearby countries. Earlier this morning a text message has been circulating and warning people about the nuclear power plant radiation leak. Here are the text messages I received this afternoon. And I know most of you probably received the same or similar text messages. (Philippines only)

The text messages caused panic in our country. A number of schools in Manila already canceled classes because of the alarming text messages.

There were three versions of the text message. I only received two and here they are.
Text Message Version 1:
BBC FLASHNEWS: japan government confirms radiation leak at Fukushima nuclear plants. Asian countries should take necessary precautions. Remain indoors first 24hrs. Close doors and windows. Swab neck skin with betadine where thyroid area is, radiation hits thyroid first. Take extra precaution, radiation may hit Philippines at starting 4pm today. Please send to your loved ones.

Text Message Version 2:
Nuclear power plant in Fukushima Japan was in blast 4:30am today. If it rains tomorrow or later, don’t go outside. If you are outside be sure that you have rain protectors. Acid Rain yun. Don’t let it touch you. You may burn your skin, lose your hair or have cancer. Please pass and take care everyone.

After researching for more information. The information that was circulating was a hoax.

The leakage was only minimal and could have not reached our country. Also, it was reported in the ABS-CBN’s TV Patrol this evening that the whole thing was a hoax made by people who don’t have anything to do but cause trouble to other people.
