Early of June 29, 2011, Davao City was hit by an Unexpected Flash Flood Killing some people

Last night, Davao City experienced a strong rain started around 10:00PM or 11:00PM. And at around 2:00AM-3:00AM, the Matina area, including Matina Aplaya, Matina Pangi, Balusong and NHA Bangkal was suddenly hit by an unexpected flash flood killing 14-17 people.

The flash flood was due to an overflow of the Pangi River in Matina due to the heavy rain. People in the Matina and Bangkal Area were shock. Because it was already sleeping time, most of the people did not know what hit them. When they woke up, they are already surrounded by rising water.

According to Mayor Sara Duterte the water level went up from 10 feet to 15 feet in some areas. Some residents were forced to climb up to the roof of their houses to avoid getting drowned. Mayor Duterte admitted that they were caught unprepared of the incident and early warning was not executed.

Early this morning, a lot of people were stranded and stuck due to heavy traffic in the Matina and Bangkal highway. Classes in the affected area were immediately cancelled this morning. The area also experienced power loss due to the flash flood.
