Breaking News: Tsunami Alert in Philippines

Earlier today a huge earthquake, with magnitude of 8.8, hits Japan. Because of this nearby, countries will experience tidal waves. Philippines in no exception and provinces fronting the Pacific Ocean might experience tidal waves.

PHILVOCS has already raised the alert warning to Level 2 here in the Philippines.

“MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE 4) Alert level 2 has been raised in the 19 provinces that could be hit by tsunami between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. and residents have been advised to be on alert for “unusual waves,” disaster officials said Friday, after an 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck Japan.”

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) these are the following provinces that are fronting the Pacific Ocean:

• Quezon
• Aurora
• Camarines Norte
• Camarines Sur
• Albay
• Catanduanes
• Sorsogon
• Northern Samar
• Eastern Samar
• Leyte
• Southern Leyte
• Surigao del Norte
• Surigao del Sur
• Davao Oriental
• Davao del Sur

“PHIVOLCS Tsunami Alert Level is now 2. The concerned public is advised to BE ON ALERT FOR UNUSUAL WAVES. Based on tsunami wave models and early tide gauge records of the tsunami in the Pacific, coastal areas in the Philippine provinces fronting the Pacific Ocean are expected to experience wave heights of at most one meter. The first tsunami waves will arrive between 5:00PM to 7:00PM MARCH 11, 2011 Philippine time and may not always be the largest. The waves may continue for hours. People are advised to stay away from the shoreline during this period. People should not go to the coast to watch the tsunami.
